The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused the political elite of turning Nigeria’s elections into a marketplace where votes are traded, undermining democracy and deepening citizens’ suffering.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the remarks in Abuja during the public presentation of the Report on Electoral Trust and MoU signing ceremony organized by the International Press Centre (IPC).
Ajaero lamented that what should be a platform for expressing the people’s will has become “a trade fair of influence and manipulation,” leading to poor governance, poverty, and insecurity.
He urged journalists to resist political control and expose electoral malpractice, saying the media must serve as “the voice of the voiceless, not the megaphone of the powerful.”
Ajaero commended IPC’s collaboration with NAWOJ and GOCOP, describing it as a step toward restoring transparency and accountability.
He called on the media to uphold integrity as the 2027 elections approach, stressing that “the NLC stands ready to work with all genuine forces to reclaim democracy for the masses.”
