China has urged the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty amid reports of a U.S. threat of military action.

In a statement on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reaffirmed Beijing’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, commending Nigeria’s pursuit of a development path suited to its national realities.

“As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as excuses to interfere in another country’s internal affairs or issue military threats,” Mao said.

The U.S. had reportedly warned Nigeria of possible intervention over alleged persecution of Christians, with former President Donald Trump cited as threatening military action if the killings continued.
