The House of Representatives is considering a bill to establish a National Integrated Rural Development Agency and guarantee ₦3,500 daily pay for unskilled rural workers.
Sponsored by Marcus Onobun (Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben, Edo), the bill seeks to reduce poverty and promote sustainable rural development by providing 100 days of paid employment per year for adult participants in local projects, with one-third of the jobs reserved for women.
The proposed agency will coordinate nationwide rural programmes, monitor projects, and promote technology adoption.
Its funds will be tax-exempt, while contributions to the agency will be tax-deductible.
Onobun said the initiative aims to create a legal framework for tackling rural poverty and improving livelihoods.
The bill is awaiting second reading in the House.
