Residents across Lagos State have expressed alarm over worsening air pollution, blaming it on indiscriminate waste burning, vehicle emissions, and poor sanitation.
They urged the government to enforce environmental laws and strengthen waste management to protect public health.
From Ikorodu to Oshodi and Alagbado, residents told the Newsmen that thick fumes from refuse fires, exhaust pipes, and industries have become a daily hazard.
Mrs. Itunu Dada from Ikorodu said, “You see smoke everywhere. It causes cough and chest irritation,” while Mrs. Stella Lawrence in Alimosho blamed unfit vehicles and generator fumes for the problem.
Mr. Friday Oku, President of the Association of Wastepickers, said Nigeria’s dependence on fossil fuels worsens pollution and called for investment in renewable and CNG energy alternatives.
The Lagos Ministry of Environment says it is addressing the problem through its Air Quality Monitoring Network, but residents insist stricter enforcement and public compliance are crucial for cleaner air.
