The Senate on Wednesday confirmed General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, as it began the screening of newly appointed service chiefs at the National Assembly in Abuja.

The confirmation followed President Bola Tinubu’s request for expeditious consideration of the nominees.

The session, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was held amid tight security.

Akpabio described the exercise as a constitutional duty to ensure only competent and patriotic officers lead the nation’s security architecture.

Other nominees being screened include Major General Waheedi Shaibu (Army), Rear Admiral Idi Abbas (Navy), Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke (Air Force), and Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye (Defence Intelligence).

The appointments, according to the Presidency, form part of the administration’s efforts to strengthen national security and enhance coordination among the Armed Forces.
