Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday when a two-storey building collapsed at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, Oyingbo, Lagos, leaving one person dead and 26 others rescued.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Director, Margaret Adeseye, the rescue operation began around 12:20 a.m. after the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station received a distress call. “One recovered dead as survivors rescued alive move to 26,” she said in an update.

The building, reportedly marked as distressed before the collapse, caved in while residents were still inside. Fifteen victims — seven men, four women, and four children — sustained injuries and were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan.

Rescue efforts were still ongoing at the time of filing this report as emergency teams continued to comb through the rubble for more survivors.

Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often linked to poor construction practices, substandard materials, and weak enforcement of safety regulations.
