The Igbo Community Association (ICA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has faulted the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) for poor performance and lack of visible progress since its establishment, accusing the agency of failing to meet public expectations.
In a statement jointly signed by its President-General, Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, and Secretary-General, Mazi Emmanuel Chinwoke Onah, the group urged Igbo leaders and political representatives to show greater interest in the commission’s operations to ensure accountability and transparency.
The ICA noted that the SEDC Bill, sponsored by Deputy Senate President Benjamin Kalu, was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu earlier this year, raising hopes for accelerated development in the South-East. However, six months later, the group said “nothing tangible” had been achieved.
“There are no visible signs of activity, projects, or meaningful engagement,” the statement read, describing the commission’s silence as disappointing for residents who had anticipated change.
The ICA also queried the silence of SEDC Managing Director Mark Okoye and Deputy Senate President Kalu, questioning whether the commission was “created for real development or as a political arrangement.”
“If funding is truly the challenge, why have these principal figures failed to communicate openly with the people?” the group asked, demanding answers from the commission’s leadership and stakeholders
