Senator Ned Nwoko says peace will return to Nigeria’s South-East if the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is released and a new state is created in the region.
Speaking on Channels Television on Sunday, the lawmaker representing Delta North described Kanu’s continued detention as unjust and a major cause of unrest. “If you want to get him tried and convicted, get on with it. But this is a guy who has been held unjustly,” Nwoko said.
He added that creating a sixth state in the South-East would address long-standing feelings of marginalisation, noting that the zone remains the only region with five states.
Nwoko revealed that he previously met President Bola Tinubu to discuss insecurity and political imbalance in the region.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly Joint Constitution Review Committee has approved the creation of a new South-East state, a move Nwoko described as “a step in the right direction.”
