The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched a Strategy and Roadmap for Trans-Fatty Acid Regulation aimed at strengthening food safety and protecting public health in Nigeria.
In a statement on Sunday, NAFDAC’s media consultant Olusayo Akintola described the move as a milestone in the fight against unhealthy dietary risks.
NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye said the roadmap sets a limit of two grams of industrially produced trans fats per 100 grams of total fat in food products, aligning with World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.
Adeyeye noted that Nigeria was recognised by WHO in 2023 as one of seven countries implementing best-practice policies on trans-fat elimination.
She added that the roadmap focuses on food reformulation, lab capacity expansion, compliance monitoring, and public education, urging collaboration across government, industry, and civil society to ensure success.
