Tension has gripped Epe-Ekiti in Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State as residents and youths on Thursday staged a mass protest against their monarch, the Elepe of Epe-Ekiti.

The protesters, chanting songs of rejection and carrying leaves, marched through major streets, declaring that they no longer recognized the monarch and urging the state government to remove him.

One of the protesters accused the government of imposing an unpopular ruler on the town, saying, “We, the people of Epe-Ekiti, do not want this king.”

The demonstration disrupted activities for hours as security operatives monitored the situation to prevent violence.

As of press time, neither the Ekiti State Government nor palace officials had issued an official response.
