The Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to Friday for him to open his defence on terrorism-related charges filed by the Federal Government.

The adjournment followed Kanu’s decision to dismiss his legal team and represent himself.

His former counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Kanu Agabi, informed the court that Kanu had retrieved his defence file and chosen to proceed personally.

Justice James Omotosho directed former defence lawyers to leave the courtroom, but later granted a short adjournment after SAN Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu requested time for Kanu to prepare.

The prosecution, led by SAN Adegboyega Awomolo, did not oppose the request.

Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021, has filed a motion seeking to call 23 witnesses, including governors, ministers, and security chiefs to testify in his defence.

He also asked the court to extend his defence period from six to 90 days, insisting their testimonies will establish his innocence.
