Vice-President Kashim Shettima has assured the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains a strong ally of the media, committed to protecting journalistic integrity.

Shettima, speaking on Wednesday while hosting NUJ leaders at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, described Tinubu as a long-time supporter of the press who will uphold media freedom and professional ethics.

He stressed that journalists are crucial in holding public officials accountable and shaping democratic governance, noting that the media stands almost on par with the judiciary in ensuring transparency and justice.

“You are the lifewire of the nation; we cannot afford to muzzle you,” he said.

Shettima also acknowledged journalists’ historical role in Nigeria’s political development, recalling that leaders like Herbert Macaulay, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Obafemi Awolowo began their careers in journalism.

He reassured that the government would continue to support the NUJ and the broader media industry amid economic challenges.
