The Federal Government has clarified that no inmate has yet been released under President Bola Tinubu’s recent Prerogative of Mercy, saying the process is still undergoing final administrative review.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said on Thursday that the Council of State’s approval does not translate to immediate release, as all names must first be verified and legally cleared.

He emphasized that the review process ensures transparency and due diligence before the Nigerian Correctional Service is authorised to act.

“There is no delay; the law is simply being followed to ensure only qualified persons benefit from the President’s mercy,” Fagbemi said, assuring that the public will be notified once the process is completed.
