Nigeria’s electricity generation rose by six per cent in September 2025, but the national grid remains unstable, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

NERC’s latest Operational Performance Factsheet shows that out of the 13,625 megawatts (MW), of installed capacity, only about 5,200 MW 38 per cent was available for dispatch. Despite the slight improvement from August, the figure still falls short of national power needs.

The report blamed poor generation performance on gas shortages, plant maintenance issues, and transmission constraints.

Grid frequency stability was maintained only 48 per cent of the time, while voltage levels frequently exceeded regulatory limits, indicating fragility in the system.

Zungeru Hydro Power Plant led performance with a 100 per cent availability factor, followed by Egbin, Kainji, and Jebba, which recorded strong outputs.

However, several plants, including Alaoji, Rivers, Ibom Power, and Omoku, generated no electricity during the month.
