The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command has foiled a planned kidnap attempt by suspected bandits in the Byazhin Forest area of Abuja, recovering an AK-47 rifle and live ammunition.
In a statement on Tuesday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the operation was conducted by the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit following credible intelligence that a notorious bandit leader, Idrisa, alias Mai Duna, was plotting coordinated attacks on nearby villages.
Acting on the tip-off, police operatives ambushed the suspects on October 10, leading to a gun battle that lasted about 20 minutes. The criminals were subdued and fled into the forest with gunshot wounds.
Recovered items include an AK-47 rifle with a defaced serial number, one magazine, and 30 rounds of live ammunition.
The FCT Commissioner of Police commended the operatives for their bravery, describing the operation as a major success in averting a security breach in the capital.
