The African Democratic Congress (ADC), has cautioned the National Assembly against plans to amend the Electoral Act and conduct the 2027 general elections in November 2026, warning that such a move could disrupt governance and national development.
In a statement on Tuesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the proposal would “shorten the effective period for governance, push the nation into a perpetual campaign mode, and hinder long-term development.”
He argued that advancing the polls by six months would leave little room for governance before political campaigns dominate the atmosphere.
“The solution lies in strengthening institutions, enforcing tribunal timelines, and improving the judiciary and INEC’s capacity not shifting election dates,” Abdullahi stated.
He warned that Nigeria “cannot afford a democracy where government campaigns for two years and governs for two.”
