The Lagos State Government has announced a full-scale enforcement against individuals and organisations involved in illegal land reclamation and waterfront encroachment across the state.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that enforcement will begin Wednesday, October 15, following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued through public notices.
Wahab said the grace period for compliance ended on September 25, stressing that the government would now strictly enforce environmental laws.
He warned that all illegal reclamation structures without statutory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Drainage Clearance Certificates would be removed, and offenders prosecuted in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.
Wahab urged residents to desist from buying land from illegal reclamation operators, insisting the government will protect the environment and restore order to coastal areas.
