The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), has reaffirmed that a 10-year ban on strikes and lockouts remains in force across all Free Trade Zones (FTZs), in the country, including the Dangote Refinery.

Managing Director of NEPZA, Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, stated this in Abuja while reacting to recent union actions that disrupted operations at the refinery.

In a statement by NEPZA’s Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Martins Odeh, Ogunyemi described the dispute between PENGASSAN and the refinery as “troubling,” stressing that grievances should be channelled through NEPZA as required by law.

Citing Section 18(5) of the NEPZA Act, he noted that “there shall be no strikes or lockouts for a period of ten years following the commencement of operations within a Zone,” adding that NEPZA is empowered to resolve all trade disputes arising within the zones.

While affirming workers’ right to unionise, Ogunyemi said the restriction is essential to maintain stability and attract investment.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for his swift intervention in resolving the recent crisis, describing it as a show of leadership and commitment to protecting national assets.
