A mob on Saturday evening attacked a scavenger, identified as Nasiru Yahuza, for allegedly stealing two pieces of zinc in Kango community, Kuje Area Council of the FCT.
A resident, Shuaibu Hussaini, said the incident happened around 5:48 pm when Yahuza entered an ongoing construction site and quietly removed the zinc used to fence the building.
“The scavenger was pushing his cart when he entered the compound and removed two pieces of zinc, not knowing a neighbour was watching him,” Hussaini said.
The neighbour reportedly raised an alarm, attracting residents who chased and beat the suspect before vigilantes intervened and handed him over to the police.
A vigilante member, Markus Bala, confirmed the incident and lamented rising theft cases involving scavengers in the area. “There’s hardly a day that passes without reports of scavengers stealing cooking pots, iron rods, or water drums,” he said.
A police source also confirmed the arrest, adding that the suspect would be charged to court after investigation.
