Council Approves Prof. Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

The National Council of State has approved Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), from Kogi State as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Amupitan’s name to the Council to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended in October 2025.

The President described him as “apolitical” and praised his integrity and experience.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and other members of the Council endorsed the nomination, which will now be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

Amupitan, 58, is a Professor of Law and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), at the University of Jos, and Pro-Chancellor of Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Osun State.

He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2014 and has authored several legal publications.

A native of Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu LGA of Kogi State, Amupitan holds LLB, LLM, and PhD degrees in Law from the University of Jos. He is married with four children.
