The Senate on Tuesday considered a bill seeking to suspend the international passports of Nigerians convicted of crimes abroad for 10 years after serving their jail terms.
Sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), the bill aims to amend the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act to help restore Nigeria’s global reputation.
Speaking for the sponsor, Senator Onawo Ogwoshi (Nasarawa South) described the proposal as both “punitive and deterrent,” saying it would discourage crimes that tarnish the nation’s image.
He lamented that innocent Nigerians face undue suspicion and visa denials because of the actions of a few, noting that the once-respected green passport has “lost its dignity.”
Supporters of the bill believe the measure would reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to accountability and help rebuild international confidence in its citizens.
