Members of the Minority Caucus in Nigeria’s House of Representatives are scheduled to meet in Abuja on Monday to discuss the growing controversy surrounding their leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, following reports of an alleged plot to remove him.
The meeting, according to a notice circulated on Sunday, was jointly endorsed by key opposition lawmakers including Agbedi Frederick (PDP), Afam Ogene (Labour Party), Muktar Umar-Zakari (NNPP), and Peter Uzokwe (YPP).
Chinda recently filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to restrain certain members of the opposition from proceeding with what he described as a coordinated plan to oust him.
In the writ of summons dated September 25, 2025, he alleged that the move to unseat him stemmed from his perceived closeness to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
He argued that any such action would infringe upon his constitutional right to freedom of association.
The lawmaker is asking the court to issue an injunction restraining the National Assembly, its Clerk, the House of Representatives, the Speaker, the Clerk of the House, and the leadership of opposition parties, including the PDP, LP, NNPP, APGA, SDP, ADC, and YPP from implementing any decision to remove him.
Sources within the House revealed that some members of the Minority Caucus have accused Chinda of compromising the opposition’s independence and aligning too closely with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). They claim his leadership has weakened the caucus’s ability to hold the government accountable on critical national issues such as insecurity, inflation, and corruption.
Critics also faulted him for failing to convene caucus meetings since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly over two years ago, and for granting media interviews allegedly at variance with the official position of his party, the PDP.
The group pushing for his removal is reportedly determined to table the motion once plenary resumes on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
