The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has flagged off the “Light Up Abuja” initiative, a major solar-powered streetlight project designed to enhance security, beautify the city, and modernize its infrastructure.
The project, inaugurated on Thursday, October 2, 2025, involves the installation of integrated hybrid solar-powered streetlights across districts, arterial roads, and highways of the nation’s capital.
The 300W fittings combine solar and conventional energy sources, ensuring consistent lighting even during cloudy weather or low sunlight conditions.
Wike explained that the project would be rolled out in phases, synchronized with ongoing road works and public infrastructure projects to minimize disruption.
He said the initiative was vital to closing Abuja’s energy gap, recalling that about 80 percent of the city had been left in darkness before he assumed office.
“Constant light will not only improve visibility and reduce electricity costs, it will also deter criminals, boost nighttime economic activities, and enhance Abuja’s aesthetics as we prepare to mark the city’s 50th anniversary in February 2026,” the Minister stated.
He further revealed that the hybrid solar system was embedded with surveillance technology to discourage theft and vandalism.
According to him, the Light Up Abuja project will redefine the city’s nighttime landscape, offering safer streets for residents and visitors while promoting environmental sustainability.
