The Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has elected Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed Halidu as its new chairman following a tightly contested congress at the party secretariat in Minna.

According to the returning officer, Barrister Tanimu Turaki (SAN), Halidu polled 1,289 votes to edge out Yahaya Abdullahi, popularly known as “Ability,” who garnered 1,260 votes.

Eight other positions were also contested, while some officers emerged unopposed.

Salome Ndakotsu was elected State Woman Leader with 1,373 votes against Ramotu Jibrin’s 590, while Hadi Kuta returned unopposed as State Secretary.

In his acceptance speech, Halidu urged party members to unite, stressing the need to “sheathe their swords” and work together to rebuild the PDP ahead of the November local government elections and the 2027 general polls.

He pledged to strengthen party structures and restore its political influence across the state.

Analysts say the slim margin of Halidu’s victory highlights divisions within the party, making reconciliation and internal cohesion his first major challenge as chairman.
