The 10th Senate has postponed the resumption of plenary from September 23 to October 7, 2025, extending its annual recess by two more weeks.

The adjustment was conveyed in an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and circulated on Monday.

Though no official reason was given, sources within the National Assembly said the delay would allow lawmakers to participate fully in Independence Day celebrations on October 1.

The decision has raised concerns among some senators, who fear it could stall crucial legislative work, including debates on pending motions, oversight functions, and confirmation of executive nominees.

In the memo, titled “Notice of Shift in Plenary Resumption Date,” Akubueze apologized for the short notice and urged senators to adjust their schedules. “Any inconvenience this may cause is deeply regretted,” he wrote.

The Senate had originally adjourned plenary on July 24 for its annual recess, a break Senate President Akpabio described as “chamber reciprocity” with the House of Representatives.

With the new date, the upper chamber will have been on recess for nearly 11 weeks before reconvening.
