Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush is a doubt for Sunday’s derby against Manchester United after sustaining a knee ligament injury on international duty with Egypt.
The 26-year-old was forced off in the fourth minute of Egypt’s goalless World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on Tuesday.
He attempted to continue after a tackle but limped off shortly after.
The Egyptian Football Association said team doctors diagnosed a bruised knee ligament, with an X-ray scheduled in Cairo on Wednesday to determine the extent of the damage.
Marmoush, who joined City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January for £59 million ($79.8m), has scored eight goals in 28 appearances across all competitions.
His absence would be a major blow as Pep Guardiola’s side, already under pressure after an inconsistent Premier League start, prepare to host United at the Etihad Stadium.
