The Trade Union Congress (TUC), has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to withdraw the newly introduced 5% tax on petroleum products.

The levy, contained in the Nigeria Tax Administration Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025, has been denounced by the union as an “anti-people policy” that will deepen hardship for millions of Nigerians.

In a statement jointly signed by TUC President, Festus Osifo, and General Secretary, Nuhu Toro, the union said the measure would “compound suffering, cripple businesses, and push citizens further into poverty.”

The labour leaders reminded government that Nigerians are still grappling with the effects of fuel subsidy removal, rising inflation, and the weakening naira.

They warned that unless the policy is reversed immediately, the TUC would mobilize its affiliates and the general public for mass resistance, including the possibility of a nationwide strike.

“Nigerians deserve economic justice, not endless punishment,” the statement read.
