The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), chapter, on Monday, September 8, 2025, embarked on a seven-day warning strike over what it described as the “long-standing systemic failure” of the FCT health system.
In a statement signed by its president, Dr. George Ebong, and other executives, the association said doctors in Abuja are being overstretched, often covering multiple departments due to acute manpower shortages and poor working conditions.
“The situation has become unbearable. Resident doctors in the FCT are under immense pressure, working across multiple departments at once.
This is not sustainable, and it jeopardises the quality of care delivered to patients,” the statement read.
The doctors stressed that the strike goes beyond welfare issues, warning that without urgent reforms, the FCT healthcare system risks total collapse.
They called on the government to immediately address staffing gaps, poor remuneration, and decaying infrastructure in public health facilities, cautioning that failure to act could lead to a prolonged industrial action.
