Residents of Kubwa village in Abuja have been without electricity for two weeks after Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), officials were allegedly assaulted during a routine inspection.

According to residents, the officials were checking for illegal connections when some youths blocked their visit to the community chief’s palace, leading to a fracas.

In response, AEDC disconnected the entire community from its transformer.

A resident, Adamu Muhammad, said appeals to the local AEDC office yielded no result, as officials insisted the chief must intervene.

The chief, Bala Yakubu, confirmed the blackout and said efforts were underway to resolve the issue.

The community’s youth leader, Buhari Abu, faulted AEDC’s decision to punish the whole community, noting that many businesses had collapsed and goods spoiled due to the outage.

An AEDC official in Gbazango confirmed the assault and said checks had revealed bypassed meters and unpaid bills for over a year.

He explained that staff withdrew to avoid escalation and later cut off supply.

The official added that customers with valid payment records could have their power restored individually, though residents claimed they were asked to wait until the matter is resolved.
