The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has entered into a partnership with Yakubu Gowon University to strengthen inmate rehabilitation through expanded educational and vocational training.
The initiative was formalized during a visit by the FCT Controller of Corrections, Christopher Jen, to the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Matthew.
Jen stressed the need for practical academic and skill-building programs that prepare inmates for life after prison.
“We want to ensure our inmates are kept busy and acquire skills that will enable us to sleep with our two eyes closed when they are discharged,” he said.
Prof. Matthew welcomed the collaboration and pledged immediate action, directing the university’s Open and Distance Learning Centre to establish a study hub within FCT custodial facilities.
The program will complement existing interventions by the National Open University of Nigeria and broaden access to formal education for inmates while serving their sentences.
Prof. Matthew further emphasized the university’s role in reshaping public attitudes, noting that “society must be enlightened on the importance of accepting and supporting rehabilitated individuals.”
Officials say the partnership marks a significant step toward reducing recidivism and promoting reintegration of ex-inmates into society.
