Aniobi James Chukwuebuka, better known as Jkay, is carving a niche in the Nigerian music scene with his self-styled sound, Afro-Conscious.
Born in Enugu and raised in Lagos, the independent afrobeat and highlife artist says his mission is not to “follow the crowd” but to “watch the crowd” and create music rooted in truth and meaning.
Influenced by icons like 2Baba, Lucky Dube, Flavour, P-Square, and Oliver de Coque, Jkay began performing as a child. Unlike many of his peers, he avoids what he calls “baby songs,” choosing instead to craft socially conscious music that tells real-life stories.
His deep baritone voice has drawn comparisons with Bella Shmurda, Mr Eazi, Davido, Patoranking, Joeboy, and even international acts such as Clinton Fearon.
His big break came in 2022 with Sweet Love (Remix), featuring U.S. artists Peter Jericho and Black Magik under Manatee Records.
The track topped Boomplay’s global chart, amassing over one million streams. His EP Arrival also gained international traction, debuting at number six on U.S. iTunes before climbing to number two. He describes the success as a mix of “grace and hard work.”
Recognition followed at the Top Africa Music Awards, where he won Best Inspirational Song with a Message. Yet, behind the spotlight lies a decade-long struggle.
“I’ve been in the music business for over 10 years. It still hurts not having collaborations with great stars like Davido, Wizkid, Don Jazzy, and Rema,” Jkay revealed.
For him, access remains the biggest challenge. “Do you know how it feels to be in their DMs for years without even one response?” he asked.
He urged young artists to treat music like a business, avoid exploitative label deals, and stay focused on their personal journey.
With his Afro-Conscious movement, Jkay says he is determined to continue spreading messages of hope, resilience, and culture, establishing himself as a voice for his generation.
