In a dramatic development, Matthew Yare, the Speaker of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, has been removed from office.
The impeachment, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, led to the election of Ibrahim Jankaro as the new Speaker by eight members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The APC’s numerical superiority, following the defection of Executive Chairman Christopher Maikalangu from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, enabled the party to outmaneuver the PDP.
With eight out of twelve wards under their control in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, the APC councillors successfully outnumbered their PDP counterparts, paving the way for Yare’s replacement.
