Town planners have called for a fresh approach to regional development in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stressing the need for inclusive and sustainable planning in Abuja’s satellite towns.
The call was made on Thursday during the 2025 Town Planners Day celebration organized by the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), FCT Chapter, in Abuja.
Speaking at the event themed “Regional Development in the FCT: Rethinking Public Sector-led Development of Abuja Satellite Towns,” the Chairman of NITP FCT Chapter, Tpl. Queen I. Phillips, described the discussion as timely and critical.
Phillips noted that the original Abuja Master Plan envisioned balanced growth in which satellite towns would complement the Federal Capital City.
She emphasized the need to rethink existing strategies to ensure development that is both inclusive and sustainable.
The forum brought together stakeholders, experts, and professionals to chart the way forward for regional development in the FCT, particularly through public sector-led initiatives.
Discussions also highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing the challenges of urban growth, with participants urging a coordinated effort to create a more livable and sustainable environment for residents of the capital and its environs.
