Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has explained why he would choose President Bola Tinubu over Peter Obi if both contested the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking on Channels Television on Friday, Adeyanju said his position was not out of loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), but rooted in his convictions about democracy, tolerance, and political conduct.

“If the opposition presents Peter Obi, I will vote Tinubu. We cannot have a situation where a man’s supporters cannot tolerate criticism. Anybody who doesn’t support their candidate is branded an enemy or accused of being paid,” he said.

Adeyanju dismissed claims that he was working for the APC, stressing that he had always voted across party lines. “In 1999, I voted Obasanjo; in 2011 and 2015, Jonathan. In 2023, I voted Omoyele Sowore,” he noted.

He accused some of Obi’s supporters of online intimidation during the 2023 elections, citing their attacks on actress Joke Silva and others who backed Tinubu. According to him, such conduct erodes democratic values.

While acknowledging that Obi’s candidacy initially excited him as an opportunity for the South-East, Adeyanju said his enthusiasm faded due to the behaviour of some supporters.

“My opposition to Obi does not mean I support APC. I am just expressing my views as a Nigerian,” he concluded, adding that his activism remains focused on defending democracy and free expression.
