Manchester United suffered a humiliating League Cup exit on Wednesday, losing 12-11 on penalties to fourth-tier Grimsby Town after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
United trailed 2-0 with 15 minutes left, courtesy of goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, before Bryan Mbeumo sparked a late comeback.
However, his penalty miss sealed the Red Devils’ fate.
Despite fielding a star-studded lineup, including new £74 million signing Benjamin Sesko, United struggled against Grimsby’s resilient defense.
The League Two side deservedly led at halftime and held on for one of the most embarrassing results in Manchester United’s history.
The loss adds pressure on manager Ruben Amorim, whose team has yet to find form this season.
United, who finished 15th in the Premier League last season, now face a potential trophyless campaign, with scrutiny mounting over Amorim’s future.
