The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has rejected the Federal Government’s plan to rename the institution after former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking after a congress meeting in Maiduguri, UNIMAID ASUU chairman, Dr. Abubakar Mshelia Saidu, described the proposal as “provocative, unacceptable, and deeply offensive” to academic freedom, institutional integrity, and democratic governance.
He stressed that the University of Maiduguri’s name embodies decades of scholarship, sacrifice, and service to the Northeast and Nigeria.
Saidu warned that renaming the institution without consulting the governing council, staff, students, alumni, or host community would be a “recipe for disaster.” “To erase that legacy without engagement is to insult the very soul of this institution,” he said.
