Train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna route have been temporarily suspended following a derailment that occurred on Tuesday around 11:09 a.m., between Kubwa and Asham stations.
The incident left six passengers with minor injuries, which have since been treated, and no fatalities were recorded.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), announced the suspension, with Managing Director Kayode Opeifa confirming that a team of technical experts, in collaboration with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), and other relevant agencies, has been deployed to investigate the site. Opeifa also assured passengers that ticket refunds have been initiated.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Opeifa refuted claims that the trains were poorly maintained and met with some passengers at the Idu train station to provide updates on the situation.
The NSIB has launched a formal probe into the derailment, with investigators dispatched to gather evidence and determine the cause.
Bimbo Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, said the bureau aims to conduct a “transparent and independent investigation” to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The agency’s Director General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., expressed sympathy to the victims and their families.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently on a state visit to Brazil, expressed deep concern over the incident via his verified X handle, extending prayers to the injured and assuring Nigerians that prompt measures are being taken.
“I am deeply saddened by this incident. My heartfelt prayers are with the injured, their families, and all passengers who went through this distressing experience,” he said.
The derailment has renewed concerns about railway safety and infrastructure in Nigeria.
Both the NRC and NSIB have committed to thorough investigations to ensure operational safety and prevent recurrence of such incidents.
