Tunisia has announced plans to introduce a new branch of medical specialization dedicated to aging medicine.
The Minister of Health, Dr. Mustafa Al-Furjani, disclosed this on Monday, August 25, 2025, after a meeting at the ministry’s headquarters with the Medical Council, the Tunisian Association of Elderly Medicine, and other health experts.
The session reviewed steps to integrate aging medicine into the official catalog of medical disciplines, including a five-year training program for doctors and the establishment of a national framework to support the specialty.
Dr. Al-Furjani said the move aims to strengthen the healthcare system and ensure that elderly citizens receive services tailored to their needs.
Experts at the meeting noted that the initiative aligns Tunisia with global trends that recognize geriatric care as vital to sustainable healthcare. They added that the specialty will improve responses to age-related conditions and train doctors to address the growing complexities of elderly care.
