A violent rainstorm, described as the fiercest in nearly two decades, has destroyed homes and displaced dozens of families in rural communities of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The storm battered Gawu Ward in Abaji Area Council, tearing through villages including Gasakpa I, Gasakpa II, Gimgbe, Gawu Town, Tungan-Usman, and Fuka-Jamigbe.
Locals said it was the heaviest downpour in 18 years, with houses collapsing as residents scrambled for safety.
Although no lives were lost, the destruction was widespread.
Malam Saidu Garba’s newly roofed three-bedroom mud house caved in, leaving his family homeless.
In Jamigbe, Shuaibu Aliyu’s home collapsed, forcing his family to take shelter with relatives.
He appealed for urgent government support, noting that most victims are poor farmers with no means to rebuild.
In response, Abaji Area Council has set up an emergency assessment committee led by Vice Chairman Alhaji Isah Makkah to document the damage and coordinate relief.
The displaced families are relying on neighbors for temporary shelter while awaiting government assistance, amid fears that more rains could worsen their plight.
