The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has launched an investigation into 1,369 organizations over alleged breaches of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA).
Targeting key sectors such as banking, insurance, pensions, and gaming, the probe demands that the affected firms among them 795 financial institutions, prove compliance within 21 days.
According to NDPC spokesperson Babatunde Bamigboye, companies must show evidence of filing their 2024 compliance audit returns and appointing a Data Protection Officer.
The Commission warned that failure to comply would attract stiff sanctions.
The move comes shortly after the N766.2 million fine imposed on Multichoice Nigeria, underscoring the agency’s resolve to enforce data privacy laws.
NDPC said the enforcement drive is aimed at protecting citizens’ data and boosting Nigeria’s standing in the global digital economy.
