Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called on citizens to learn self-defense skills as a means of enhancing personal safety amid rising security concerns.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Musa likened self-defense to other essential life skills such as driving and swimming, noting that preparedness could prove vital in moments of danger.
He cited European countries where swimming is made compulsory to emphasize the importance of security awareness.
The defence chief also proposed the inclusion of unarmed combat training in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), programme to better equip young graduates for survival.
He criticized the reduction of the NYSC orientation to three weeks, saying the period was inadequate to instill vital survival and security knowledge.
Musa stressed that national security is a collective responsibility and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, identifying suspicious individuals and activities to help prevent breaches.
According to him, skills such as self-defense, swimming, and driving are indispensable in today’s world, where malicious actors continue to pose threats to public safety.
