The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), has officially commenced the offtake of 10 Megawatts (MW), of solar power from the Haske Solar Plant in the Challawa Industrial Cluster, Kano.

The development follows a Power Purchase Agreement between KEDCO and Haske Solar Company Ltd, a project developed by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), and managed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).

Commissioned in January 2023, the Haske Solar Plant is Nigeria’s largest grid-connected solar facility.

The agreement was signed in Abuja by KEDCO’s MD/CEO, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, and the Executive Director of Portfolio Management, Mr. Tajudeen Datti Ahmed, with Future Energies Africa (FEA), MD, Yusuf Yahaya, in attendance.

Dr. Jimeta described the partnership as a milestone in KEDCO’s drive to deliver reliable and sustainable electricity to customers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States.

“By integrating solar power into our supply mix, we are enhancing network efficiency while contributing to Nigeria’s energy transition goals,” he said.

The solar energy is evacuated through KEDCO’s Abattoir Injection Substation and supplied to industrial customers in the Challawa cluster via the NBC 11KV and Ceramic 11KV feeders.

Yusuf Yahaya emphasized FEA’s commitment to transforming KEDCO through renewable energy adoption, describing the project as key to sustainable development in Northern Nigeria.

KEDCO also commended the Federal Government, NSIA, MOFI, and Kano State Government for supporting the initiative, noting that more renewable projects are under review as part of its energy diversification strategy aimed at ensuring energy security, industrial growth, and socio-economic development.
