Residents of Abaji Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), were thrown into mourning on Sunday evening after the body of a newborn baby was discovered in floodwater.

The infant, wrapped in cloth, was spotted around 6:37 p.m. at an erosion site behind a slaughterhouse in Unguwar Abattoir following a heavy downpour.

A resident, Mrs. Amina Yakubu, raised the alarm after seeing the body, prompting neighbors and two vigilante members to recover the child from beneath a large log.

Confirming the incident, an environmental officer, Danjuma, said the remains were deposited at a local hospital morgue on the advice of security operatives and the police.

Authorities suspect the baby may have been dumped by an unknown woman before being swept away by floodwater. The FCT Police Command has launched an investigation to trace those responsible.

The body is currently at the hospital mortuary pending further inquiries.
