A five-storey building under construction in Abuja’s Mabushi District partially collapsed on July 24, 2025, sparking widespread concerns over safety and regulatory oversight.

Originally designed as a three-storey structure in 2023, the building was later extended to five floors.

Residents fear the additional load and alleged use of substandard materials may have compromised its integrity.

“It appears there was a compromise between the engineer and the developer,” said Samuel Onuoha, a resident, alleging that poor-quality materials were used.

He added that officials of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), had visited the site but provided little effective supervision.

A security guard in a nearby estate, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the FCDA marked the site for sealing after the collapse, but construction resumed only days later.

Efforts to reach the Director of Development Control, Muktar Galadima, were unsuccessful, as he neither took calls nor replied to messages at press time.

The building, situated behind the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Grace City Parish, off Ahmadu Bello Way, remains under construction despite the collapse, leaving residents worried about the looming risk of another disaster.
