The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), on Friday sealed off the Efab Metropolis Estate in Karsana District along the Murtala Mohammed Expressway over alleged non-payment of tenement rates amounting to ₦600 million since 2022.
The enforcement exercise, which lasted several hours, saw several residents; including serving lawmakers and a retired Supreme Court Justice, temporarily locked in as officials and security operatives blocked the main entrance to the estate, restricting movement.
The estate was later reopened following the intervention of some high-profile residents, including the lawmakers. By Monday morning, normalcy had returned with free human and vehicular movement observed in and out of the estate.
AMAC’s Coordinator of Tenement Rate, Ambassador Dr. Alewa Akawu Nasiru, stressed that the council would continue to carry out its constitutional responsibility of enforcing compliance while allowing room for dialogue.
He disclosed that residents had requested additional time to resolve the issue.
Retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, a resident of the estate, appealed for obedience to judicial rulings, warning that disregard for court orders would not be tolerated.
