The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has cautioned Nigerians against delegating the registration of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), cards to domestic staff such as drivers or ‘House Helps’.

Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, issued the warning during a media session yesterday, stressing that such actions constitute a crime and could lead to embarrassment and legal consequences.

“I can authoritatively say there is no unregistered SIM operating in Nigeria’s telecom networks. But if you send your driver or house help to register a SIM because you don’t want your identity to be known, you are committing a crime,” Maida said.

He clarified that the Commission should not be blamed for misuse of SIMs registered by proxies, noting that offenders will be held accountable.

The NCC boss further disclosed that the Commission will step up public enlightenment to discourage the practice, warning that excuses such as paying third parties to carry out SIM registration will not absolve offenders if issues arise.
