A fire outbreak on Monday morning destroyed parts of a commercial plaza in Garki 2, Abuja, though no casualties were reported.
The incident, which affected two rooms within the plaza, was quickly contained by operatives of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), whose swift response prevented a wider disaster.
According to the FFS, a distress call was received at about 6:48 a.m., prompting immediate deployment of firefighters to the scene.
SPM Agbo Benson, an FFS officer, described the operation as intense. “We were in our office this morning when we got the call.
“The fire was tense, with heavy smoke and flames, but being close to the station gave us an edge, and we brought it under control,” he said.
The plaza’s operator, who declined to be named, confirmed the damage but expressed gratitude that no lives were lost. “Yes, there was a fire in the boys’ quarters. We tried using our extinguisher, but it failed. Eventually, everything in the building was burnt, but we thank God no one was injured,” he said.
An eyewitness, Chike Sherry, commended the firefighters. “We saw flames behind our building and rushed over, but the fire service had already done a good job containing it,” he noted.
