The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has impounded more than 700 vehicles in Abuja for offences ranging from illegal tinted glass to fake and mismatched number plates in a renewed clampdown on traffic violations and insecurity.

The enforcement, tagged Operation Sweep Abuja Clean (Phase Two), was carried out by a joint task force comprising the Department of Security Services, the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), and the Police.

Officials said the move targets rising cases of “one-chance” robberies, where criminals pose as taxi operators to attack unsuspecting passengers.

During a stop-and-search operation at Apo-Wassa Junction and Karu axis, the FCTA Director of Security Services, Adamu Gwary, represented by Dr. Peter Olumuji, disclosed that many impounded vehicles were unregistered, illegally tinted, or fitted with fake plates.

He stressed that tinted glass often shields criminal activity, warning offenders that the crackdown would be sustained to restore order on Abuja roads.

Also speaking, the Head of Operations at DRTS, Mrs. Deborah Osho, said the task force maintained zero tolerance for fake or mismatched number plates, unregistered taxis, and motorists driving against traffic.

She noted that such violations not only endanger other road users but also provide cover for crime.

The FCTA appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies, assuring that while the exercise may cause temporary inconvenience, it is ultimately aimed at safeguarding lives and property in the FCT.
