The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has intensified its crackdown on illegal settlements, vowing to dismantle shanties that have become havens for crime in Abuja.
The move, spearheaded by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, aims to reclaim land and strengthen security across the capital city.
At a recent meeting of the Minister’s Stakeholders Committee, comprising senior security officials; areas such as Durumi and Garki’s Area 1 were flagged as hotspots for kidnappers, drug dealers, and other criminals.
Three months ago, a raid in Area 1 led to over 120 arrests and the recovery of stolen vehicles, motorcycles, and ATM cards.
However, officials say the shanties have resurfaced, with criminal gangs regrouping and posing fresh threats to residents.
According to the FCTA, the structures sit on land previously allocated to developers and government institutions.
The administration insists it will clear the sites to restore order and ensure Abuja remains safe for law-abiding citizens.
