Nigerian football icon, Christian Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman,” was laid to rest on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in his hometown of Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Chukwu, a former captain of Rangers International and the Super Eagles, died on April 12 at the age of 74.

He is remembered as one of Nigeria’s greatest defenders and a national hero who inspired generations through his leadership on and off the pitch.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who attended the burial, described Chukwu as “disciplined, dignified, polite, and empathetic.”

The state government also announced the retirement of the legendary No. 5 jersey he wore throughout his career with Rangers International.

Leading up to the burial, a colloquium and other ceremonial activities were held in his honor.

Chukwu captained Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and was celebrated globally for his defensive prowess.

In 2012, he was honoured with the African Football Legend Award for his contributions to football development on the continent.

The burial attracted several dignitaries, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), President Ibrahim Gusau, and other prominent figures in sports and politics, who paid their respects to the fallen legend.
